Poor Approach & Not for Simpler sites, 2010-02-10
This is one of the worst books I have used from Adobe Classroom series.
The first Lesson is a page from a site they have pre-built, working in CSS. This book assumes you know CSS.
I hoped to get familiar with setting up a basic site in Dreamweaver CS4. (Index page, adding pages, images, links, and publishing)
You do not get that kind of instruction in this book.
In this book you start by making CSS rules and editing them on your first page. There is no explanation as to "why" you do rules...or how these rules apply to my pages in a site AFTER this page is done. I have no idea if I HAVE to do rules ...I am lost on that whole concept.
The lesson is step by step.... Open this menu...click this or click on that...then save. NEVER explains how you would assemble your OWN page.
I have designed in HTML and I have worked in Both Expression Web and GoLive.
But So far, In DW CS4 I am not able to see what I need and what I don't, and how to do just what I need to do in this program.
It's a pretty useless book, once you are done with the lessons here, you still have no idea where to start on your own and this book is not a reference.
I am going to go get the Missing Manual that everyone seems to Hail as the Book to have.
Hopefully, that will help me get started. But honestedly, it looks like it will take awhile to get a handle on this program and get a site up and running. I do not recommend this book if you do not know Dreamweaver.
Maybe after I know the program alot better I'll feel different....but if I don't, I am going back to my older web programs. I am not sure this is a great web design program for the average user just making a simpler website.
An introduction, at best., 2010-02-09
This book is an adequate introduction to the Dreamweaver software, but it is for beginners only. If you have any experience in Dreamweaver, then find another book. This book will direct you through the step-by-step process of manipulating a small website that has already been created and provided on the included CD. It directs you through most of the work with screen shots and written description, which is nice. However it rarely describes the reasons behind the task. Therefore when it is time to create your own website, you are limited to the actions shown in the book. This book should not be considered anything more than a tutorial for rookies and even then I recommend purchasing a reference book along with it, because you will have a lot of questions. I hope this helps.
Not recommended for most people, 2010-02-04
I had to purchase this book for a class I was taking. I consider myself to be a student that catches on to computer software very easily but this book did not make learning Dreamweaver easy. The problem with it is you go though the tutorials and it just tells you what to click to complete the task. It does not go into hardly any explination as to why you are doing it or why you may want to choose another option. I have take HTML and am familiar with it but unless you are a person who already builds sites by writing HTML on a regular basis and have a firm grasp on websites then this book is not for you. It is also very hard to reference anything in this book so if you have to go back and look something up buy a different book.
Useless for beginners, 2009-12-24
I am a tech-savy media pro. I know photoshop, Final Cut, After Effects etc.. So I have a certain understanding of media software.
I was pretty happy with all the other "Classrom in a Book' books that I got. This one is way over a beginner's head.
It basically does not explain WHY anything is done leaving me completely frustrated.
heading out to find some better literature right now..
AVOID Adobe e-Books, 2009-12-15
Stay away from any Adobe e-books.
My horror story applies to my attempt to purchase and download 3 Adobe CS4 Classroom in an e-Books (Photoshop, Dreamweaver, & Flash). What a joke. When I attempted to download the digital e-Books I got an error message and a small ".acsm" file that I could not open. Called Adobe and they knew nothing about this ".acsm" file but instructed me to completely uninstall the entire CS4 Web Premium (took an hour) and then hung up on me. Another call to Adobe led to more "I'm soo sorry" comments and being put on hold while the Tech looked something up in a book only to read it to me verbatim without understanding.
In short, over a period of nearly 5 hours on the phone with Adobe "Tech Support" the overseas Adobe Tech folks told me, read to me, that the required free Adobe product "Adobe Digital Editions" (along with that funny little 2KB .acsm file that couldn't be opened) IS NOT SUPPORTED BY ADOBE yet it is required in order to read any of the Adobe e-Books. I actually had to point this download out to the Adobe Techs because they did not know it existed prior to my doing so.
Adobe refuses to support "Adobe Digital Editions" download, a required piece of the e-Book reader, because Adobe provides it for "free"(part of their encrypting digital rights management at its best). I was pointed to Google and left fending for myself after having spent over $100 on now useless e-Books this morning.
BOTTOM LINE -- Buy the hard copy of the book if you need this material. Avoid any online book as Adobe has it locked down so tight that you can't even access it regardless of the fact that you have fully paid for it!
